c35a2e372ee0e60c6f2ec7c530c32b42.jpgQ: What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize “this is it”?
JoJo:
I always like to say that I didn’t find radio…radio found me! Many years ago, I was studying Radio/Television Broadcasting at UCF during that time I entered a local beauty pageant that happened to be sponsored by an Orlando radio station. The station volunteered to train me, then hired me as a radio personality. That has been my full-time career path ever since.

Q: What was your first job in radio and early influences?
JoJo:
My first radio job was at a station here in Orlando…AM1270 WORL. One of my early on-air influences was Carol Ford who was a drive-time radio personality in New York City back in the mid to late 80’s.

Q: When you started out who was your favorite Radio DJ at the time?
JoJo:
My favorite female radio DJ was Carol Ford. All my male co-workers at WORL were my favorite male radio DJs. I learned so much from them!

Q: Tell us about your current role at Star 94.5?
JoJo:
My current role at Star 94.5 is Midday host weekdays 10am-3pm. I’m also the Midday Personality at Hot 99.5 FM in Jacksonville. In addition to my on-air duties at Star, I also have production duties, as well as maintaining an active social media presence. I also serve on our Cox Media Group Garage Project where we’re working to develop a program to address social and racial injustices and offer solutions both within our company and to better serve our advertising clients and the communities we represent.

Q: Can you share with our audience three of your favorite songs or artist?
JoJo:
Three of my favorite R&B songs: 1) Sparkle by Cameo 2) Still Waiting by Prince, and 3) All That Glitters Ain’t Gold by Prince. My favorite artist of ALL time will forever be Prince. He was a musical genius and extremely gifted.

Q: Do you have any advice you can share for those women who may want to pursue a career in broadcast journalism?
JoJo:
Always stay true to who you are. Enter the field if that’s what you feel you have been gifted to do, and not in any effort to solely gain fame and fortune. If you are truly walking your anointed path, you will be successful and highly recognized.

Q: What’s one lesson you’ve learned in your career that you can share with our audience?
JoJo:
Always stay grounded. Be as honest as possible and never try to be shady with people! Keep it 100!

Q: Can you tell our audience one of your most memorable moments in your career?
JoJo:
Oh wow, there are so many…most memorable for me are the times that I’ve heard from young people I’ve mentored and inspired along my path…when they reach out years later to share with me the meaningful and positive impact I’ve had on their lives…makes it all worthwhile for me. Also memorable are the countless opportunities over the years to meet celebrities!

Q: Which woman inspires you and why?
JoJo:
Michelle Obama. She has so much grace, patience, and tremendous power! She doesn’t take her mission to positively influence and impact the world around her for granted. I also love the way she loves her family!
